West Engineering Computing Network (WECN) was established in 2001 and supports the Mechanical Engineering - Engineering Mechanics and Chemical Engineering departments at Michigan Technological University.

One of the largest computing support departments at MTU, WECN supports about 1500 undergraduate students, 250 graduate students, and 100 faculty and staff, providing 10 undergraduate labs, 1 graduate lab, and all graduate office computing.

WECN computing facilities encompass more than half a million dollars worth of computing equipment, including computation servers and storage dedicated to research, printers and projection systems in addition to desktop computers for use in the labs.

Additionally, more than 30 different software applications are made available to WECN customers, ranging from familiar office applications to specialized engineering applications, including Unigraphics, Catia, Aspen and Comsol.

Besides supporting undergraduate and graduate research and classroom computing in these two departments, WECN also provides support for Senior Design and several Enterprise programs.

Funding for WECN comes from a variety of sources, including the Basic Computer Access Fee, department funding, as well as alumni and corporate donations.
